Bethlehem’s Enduring Bach Festival: GPS For The Soul

If you need to destress from the noise of the national debate, consider how the Bethlehem Bach Festival has helped communities come together to find calm, peace and prayer for more than 100 years.

2016-09-26-1474905909-5545014-Festival2016GregFUnfgeldCharlotteMattax.jpg

It was in 1900 that the two-year old Bach Choir of Bethlehem gave the first performance in North America of Bach’s greatest choral work, his Mass in B Minor. With only a few exceptions, the Choir has performed the Mass every year since. Their voices, nearly one hundred strong, cannot have been more fervent, nor more inspired by community spirit, than they were earlier this year at Packer Memorial Church, on the campus of Lehigh University, May 13 and 14. it was the first weekend of the 109th Bethlehem Bach Festival, and the house was packed.

Led by by Greg Funfgeld, artistic director and conductor since 1983, the Bethlehem Bach Festival’s two performances each year of its signature work, the Mass in B Minor, represent a link with the America of Andy Hardy. It was a time when classical music, and the arts in general, aspired to provide guidance and energy to communities nationwide; in the case of Bethlehem, it was according to the University’s holistic motto, “Homo Minister et Interpres Naturae,” which translates loosely to “Woman and Man, servants and interpreters of nature.”

2016-09-26-1474905863-9379570-Festival2016crowdoutsidePackerChurch.jpg The performance was one of integrity, movement, passion and weight. The effortless virtuosity and stylistic homogeneity of the combined forces in the chapel’s stone sanctity, allowed Bach’s music to sing out with infectious, exhilarating enthusiasm. Agnes Zsigovics, Rosa Lamoreaux, Daniel Taylor, Benjamin Butterfield, William Sharp and Daniel Lichti were outstanding soloists. The Choir was large, warm and flexible.

With a collaborative interpretive approach based on the latest scholarly research, kept honest by the great Bach biographer Christoph Wolff in the front row, Funfgeld focused on creating a compelling flow in which the emotional weight of each section was directed upwards, as if the music were being offered to Bach’s God. The rolling out of the massive, six-part fugue in the “Sanctus” was the most perfect single demonstration of how Funfgeld’s combined forces combined the intimate and the infinite. And beyond the music, there was a different authenticity from listening in an audience which, as I came to know, heard — as Bach intended in his humility — the prayers for consolation and peace inseparably from the music itself.

If you were not there, you can hear the same deep intensity of music making on the Festival’s recording from 1998. Bethlehem may no longer have Bethlehem Steel, but it has in the cultural fuel of its Bethlehem Bach Festival a generous helping of GPS for the soul.

2016-09-26-1474905935-9362483-Festival2016BachChoraleSing.jpg There was more to the two-day musical feast than just the B Minor Mass. On Friday afternoon, Dr. Wolff gave a stimulating lecture, and the first of two public, Bach chorale sing-alongs ensued. Friday evening, it was an exuberant, feel good concert of Bach’s gloriously optimistic Cantata No. 100, the Second Brandenburg Concerto with the brilliant trumpet soloist Terry Everson, and the procession of gorgeous delights known as the Easter Oratorio.

On Saturday morning, at the University’s Zoellner Arts Center just down the block, the Taylor 2 unit of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, with the Festival Orchestra in the pit, charmed the audience, who charmed them back with their encouragement and eager applause, in a series of joyful, inventive responses to and illuminations of music by Handel and Bach.

Then at last, after a brisk walk and a healthy lunch, the B Minor Mass of Johann Sebastian Bach, Part One, began at 2:30; Part Two began at 4:30. Then out into the night for a recreation on the Moravian College campus of the Cafe Zimmermann in Leipzig, where Bach and his fellow musicians and townspeople spent many pleasant evenings, quenching their thirsts in both music and coffee. It was thirsty work being Bach.

The Bethlehem Bach Festival’s endurance has enabled the Bach Choir of Bethlehem to give 31 concerts and educational programs year-round, reaching an audience of more than 20,000. The Choir will conclude its season December 10 and 11 with Christmas concerts in Bethlehem and Allentown, and probably snow on the ground and sleigh bells ringing in the air.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

In his now classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig brings us a literary chautauqua, a novel that is meant to both entertain and edify. It scores high on both counts. Phaedrus, our narrator, takes a present-tense cross-country motorcycle trip with his son during which the maintenance of the motorcycle becomes an illustration of how we can unify the cold, rational realm of technology with the warm, imaginative realm of artistry. As in Zen, the trick is to become one with the activity, to engage in it fully, to see and appreciate all details–be it hiking in the woods, penning an essay, or tightening the chain on a motorcycle. In his autobiographical first novel, Pirsig wrestles both with the ghost of his past and with the most important philosophical questions of the 20th century–why has technology alienated us from our world? what are the limits of rational analysis? if we can’t define the good, how can we live it? Unfortunately, while exploring the defects of our philosophical heritage from Socrates and the Sophists to Hume and Kant, Pirsig inexplicably stops at the middle of the 19th century. With the exception of Poincar, he ignores the more recent philosophers who have tackled his most urgent questions, thinkers such as Peirce, Nietzsche (to whom Phaedrus bears a passing resemblance), Heidegger, Whitehead, Dewey, Sartre, Wittgenstein, and Kuhn. In the end, the narrator’s claims to originality turn out to be overstated, his reasoning

Single Mother: The Emergence of the Domestic Intellectual

Single Mother: The Emergence of the Domestic Intellectual

Long perceived as the ultimate symbol of social breakdown and sexual irresponsibility, the single mother is now, in the context of welfare-to-work policies, often hailed as the new spokesperson for hard work and self-sufficiency. A dozen years after Dan Quayle denounced the television character Murphy Brown for making the decision to become a single mother ‘just another lifestyle choice’ President George W. Bush applauded single mothers for ‘heroic work’ and positive on-screen representations of single mothers abound, from The Gilmore Girls to Sex and the City to American Idol. Single Mother describes the recent cultural valorization of this figure that in the midst of demographic changes in the U.S. has emerged as the unlikely heroic and seductive voice of the new American family. Drawing on her own life as a single mother, interviews with dozens of other single mothers, cultural representations, and policies on welfare, immigration, childcare, and child custody, Juffer analyzes this contingent acceptance of single mothers. Finally, critiquing the relentless emphasis on self-sufficiency to the exclusion of community, Juffer shows the remarkable organizing skills of these new mothers of invention. At a moment when one-third of all babies are born to single moms, Single Mother is a fascinating and necessary examination of these new ‘domestic intellectuals’

7 Things You Need To Know To Tame The Monkey Mind

The monkey mind is something every modern human is familiar with. It’s that incessant thought stream that no matter how hard you try never seems to settle down.

It’s the worries that keep you up at night, the assumptions that cause you grief, the projections you make about the future and the regrets and sentiments you go over from the past.

To tame the monkey mind takes commitment and a deep inner desire for peace. Calming the monkey mind is the first step on the path towards life mastery.

When you consciously realize that your thoughts are energy, and that the energetic implications of what you maintain focus on are actually creating your life to be based in either joy or suffering, you can be empowered to take control over your monkey mind and access the peace of mind that makes sheer existence a true gift.

1. Seek Common Ground and Connection

Division is a distraction from the divine. When you see yourself as a lone wolf, you lose sight of the pack, and you struggle to survive, let alone thrive. Yet when you can look around and feel a connection to all the people you encounter, everything changes.

You start to focus on connection instead of seeing everything as separate. Nothing is separate. The sun in the sky keeps us all alive. The people around you complaining about their mundane daily disturbances are going through the motions just like you are, they’re merely at a different point in their personal evolution.

Instead of focusing on your independence and feeding your loneliness with divisive thought patterns, bring the focus back to finding common ground.

When you do this you shift your entire perspective.

2. Look Deeper Than the Story

Society, the people you surround yourself with, your past experiences and your present belief system all work to strengthen the story you’re narrating in your head all day long. It’s so easy to attach to your story and your thoughts are the glue that binds you there.

If you struggle with self-esteem and that’s a part of your story then without a doubt your thoughts are the roots keeping that belief alive.

When you can remain present and focus on how you feel in each moment you can start to release the constant narration and let go of the belief structures embedded in your story that hold you back from realizing your true potential.

3. Realize YOU Are Not Your Thoughts

Endless thoughts flow through your mind. A thousand thoughts pass through your mind every hour, and you have two options.

The first option is to allow your mind to act like a hose. Thoughts stream in through the top of the funnel and are directed out, they’re let go of, and they flow elsewhere without attachment.

The second option is to allow your mind to act like a filter. Thoughts attempt to pass through the filter but they get trapped. The filter of your mind clings to them for analysis and attachment. The filter gets all clogged up full of thoughts based in what you want and what you don’t want.

When you believe that every thought matters, that every thought that enters your brain is you, and that every thought needs to be examined, you become overburdened, overwhelmed, confused, directionless and prone to overanalyzing. You create internal resistance because you believe on a subconscious level that you are your thoughts.

When you allow your thoughts to show up and pass away without clinging on to them in an attempt to analyze and integrate, you access a freedom that few people embody. You enter into a vibrational state of allowing which is expansive and creates space for you to access the peace and pure joy of being.

4. Let Go of Excuses

I don’t have time. I’m too busy. These are everyone’s favorite excuses for not allowing connection, acceptance, and peace to enter your life on the level of experience.

When you’re ready to let go of the monkey mind and free yourself from the chains that keep you stuck in your head and separated from the world around you, you stop making excuses.

Breaking down the mental constructs that you’ve been attached to and strengthening for your entire life is no easy task, but it is possible and the more excuses you make, the longer it will take to break away from the mental chatter.

5. Develop a Drama Free Mentality

There’s a tendency in our society to become addicted to drama. The boldest example of this is television, you flick on the TV and suddenly you’re immersed in a world wrought with drama.

Breaking the cycle of drama will create more peace in your life, thoughts and relationships. Over time you can consciously train your brain to let go of the things you would normally make a big dramatic deal over.

Your life can be whatever you want it to be, a soap opera or a peaceful expansive existence that plays out moment by moment.

6. Release Judgement

What were they thinking? What’s wrong with them? Why are they doing that?

Judgment creates an inner resistance, a pushing against what is without ever changing what is. When you allow yourself to move into acceptance, even with the things you don’t particularly like, the monkey mind backs down.

The monkey mind thrives on judgment and drama, it’s the fuel that feeds the fire of your thoughts.

When you would normally jump into judgment, whether it’s over someone else’s actions or your own, try to practice allowing things to just be as they are. Allowing isn’t the same as condoning, it’s simply an energetic shift which helps you release attachment and aversion, the monkey mind’s favorite snacks.

7. Practice Awareness

Practice awareness of the thoughts streaming through your mind. You can’t one day wake up and decide to tame the monkey mind without bringing awareness of the thoughts themselves to the forefront. Awareness is the balm that soothes the irritation the monkey mind loves to create.

Awareness is different from attachment because it integrates with the energy of allowing. Thoughts pass by and your awareness shines a light upon them without the incessant desire to unconsciously attach to their meaning.

In every moment you can bring awareness to the forefront of what you’re feeling and thinking. When you notice anger and irritation bubbling up let yourself become consciously aware of these thoughts and your reaction to them and then just let them go.

5 Body Imbalances You Might Unknowingly Experience

By: Cassie Shortsleeve

Technology has improved our lives in many ways, but not without some consequences, including these five common bodily aches. Here’s how to address the pain without pulling the plug.

There’s no doubt that technology has its perks, from allowing us to work from all corners of the earth to meditating via an app at the touch of a finger. But despite the many advantages technology brings us every single day, it also has a downside–one that can be very painful if ignored. Americans suffer from a number of ailments relating to technology, including a type of back and shoulder pain that is now often referred to as “tech neck” (the repeated act of craning your neck forward and down over a screen, resulting in discomfort that can lead to strain and stiffness). The solution, however, isn’t to disconnect and revert back to powerless Pilgrim living. Instead, heed this advice from Sonima.com‘s pain and anatomy advisor, Pete Egoscue: “If an activity is hurting us, take a look at the body. Pain is the body’s way of trying to tell us something.”

Related: Understanding the Source of Back Pain

What is your body saying? It could be hinting at an imbalance. Maybe you’re not vertically loaded properly–meaning your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles aren’t stacking up right. Or perhaps you’re just not bearing weight evenly, says Egoscue, creator of the Egoscue Method for pain-free living.

To find out exactly what your body is telling you, tune in. Once you start paying attention to the subtle signals (usually accompanied by a minor ache), stretch or shift positions to continue enjoying your TV, laptop, smartphone or whatever device is captivating your attention in comfort and with peace of body and mind. Use Egoscue’s guide below to help translate your body’s messages and take appropriate action.

Related: Simple Stretches for Office Workers

When this hurts: BACK, SHOULDERS, HEAD
Your body may be saying…change the way you sit.
Sitting with your shoulders slumped forward, hip flexors shortened, and back rounded can put extra stress on your lower back, which may curve into a ‘C’ shape instead of its natural ‘S’ shape. This pain doesn’t come from only sitting, but also from being misaligned. Your body is compensating, Egoscue says.
Listen and learn: Look down at your feet. You want them hip-width apart facing forward with toes slightly turned in. Your knees will want to come together, but keep them out, he says. Then pull your shoulders down, relax your abs, and roll up and forward with your hips, putting an arch back into your lower back with your pelvis. In this position, he says, you’re vertically loaded. “That’s the way you sit without effort. Your body has just adapted and adjusted to what you have conditioned it to do.” Sit like this and you could notice back and shoulder pain dissipate and even see improvements in issues, like constipation and digestion, he says.

To learn the four other body imbalances that you might unknowingly experience, continue reading the original article on Sonima.com.

Obama: Low Turnout By Black Voters Would Be ‘A Personal Insult’

President Barack Obama told a predominantly black audience on Saturday that if they want to protect everything the community has fought for over the past eight years, they can’t let voter turnout fall now that he’s off the ballot.

“I will consider it a personal insult, an insult to my legacy, if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election,” he said at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation conference. “You want to give me a good send-off? Go vote.”

It was Obama’s last speech as president at the annual event, and served as both a reflection on his presidency and a rallying cry for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who spoke earlier in the evening and who he said is the only candidate who can continue his legacy. Although Obama isn’t running for re-election, “Hope is on the ballot, and fear is on the ballot too,” he said.

The line about fear was one of many references to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, a man who tried for years to delegitimize Obama’s presidency by claiming he likely lied about being born in the United States. Trump finally said on Friday that he accepted that Obama was born in the U.S. ― while still lying about his own history as a birther and patting himself on the back for his role in urging the president to release a long-form birth certificate in 2011.

Obama kicked off his speech by feigning relief over Trump’s comments, as he did on Friday.

“There’s an extra spring in my step tonight. I don’t know about you guys, but I am so relieved that the whole birther thing is over,” Obama said. “I mean, ISIL, North Korea, poverty, climate change ― none of those things weighed on my mind like the validity of my birth certificate. And to think that with just 124 days to go, under the wire we got that resolved. That’s a boost for me in the home stretch.”

“In other breaking news, the world is round, not flat,” he added with a laugh.

Obama also mocked Trump’s claim that being a black person in the U.S. is so bad now that black voters should support the Republican because, in Trump’s own words, “What the hell do you have to lose?”

We do have challenges. But we’re not stupid.
President Barack Obama

Trump must have “missed that whole civics lesson about slavery and Jim Crow ― but we’ve got a museum for him to visit so he can tune in,” Obama said, referring to the new National Museum of African American History and Culture, which he said he’d toured earlier.

“[Trump] says we’ve got nothing left to lose, so we might as well support somebody who has fought against civil rights and fought against equality and who has shown no regard for working people for most of his life,” Obama said. “Well, we do have challenges. But we’re not stupid.”

“We know the progress we’ve made, despite the forces of opposition, despite the forces of discrimination, despite the politics of backlash,” he continued, “And we intend to keep fighting against those forces.”

Clinton’s speech was shorter and not as fiery, and was spent largely praising Obama and first lady Michelle Obama for what they’ve done for the country.

“I know I speak for not just everyone in this room but so many tens of millions of Americans: Mr. President, not only do we know you are an American, you’re a great American and you make us all proud to be Americans too,” Clinton said after receiving the organization’s Trailblazer Award.

She said she would not take for granted the vote of anyone in the room, and contrasted her vision with Trump’s.

“We need ideas, not insults. Real plans to help struggling Americans in communities that have been left out and left behind; not prejudice and paranoia,” Clinton said. “We can’t let Barack Obama’s legacy fall into the hands of someone who doesn’t understand that ― whose dangerous and divisive vision for our country will drag us backwards. Instead, we need to come together.”

The 6 Secrets of Self-Control

2016-09-09-1473458162-6578277-TheSixSecretsofSelfControlHP.jpg

What is it about self-control that makes it so difficult to rely on? Self-control is a skill we all possess (honest); yet we tend to give ourselves little credit for it. Self-control is so fleeting for most that when Martin Seligman and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania surveyed two million people and asked them to rank order their strengths in 24 different skills, self-control ended up in the very bottom slot.

Watch Tommy Boy Explain His Struggles With Self-Control

When it comes to self-control, it is so easy to focus on our failures that our successes tend to pale in comparison. And why shouldn’t they? Self-control is an effort that’s intended to help achieve a goal. Failing to control yourself is just that–a failure. If you’re trying to avoid digging into that bag of chips after dinner because you want to lose a few pounds and you succeed Monday and Tuesday nights only to succumb to temptation on Wednesday by eating four servings’ worth of the empty calories, your failure outweighs your success. You’ve taken two steps forward and four steps back.

With this success/failure dichotomy in mind, I give you six strategies for self-control. Some are obvious, others counter-intuitive, but all will help you eliminate those pesky failures and ensure your efforts to boost your willpower are successful enough to keep you headed in the right direction for achieving your goals.

Self-Control Secret #1 – Meditate

Meditation actually trains your brain to become a self-control machine. Even simple techniques like mindfulness, which involves taking as little as five minutes a day to focus on nothing more than your breathing and your senses, improves your self-awareness and your brain’s ability to resist destructive impulses. Buddhist monks appear calm and in control for a reason.

Self-Control Secret #2 – Eat

File this one in the counter-intuitive category, especially if you’re having trouble controlling your eating. Your brain burns heavily into your stores of glucose when attempting to exert self-control. If your blood sugar is low, you are far more likely to succumb to destructive impulses. Sugary foods spike your sugar levels quickly and leave you drained and vulnerable shortly thereafter. Eating something that provides a slow burn for your body, such as whole grain rice or meat, will give you a longer window of self-control. So, if you’re having trouble keeping yourself out of the company candy bin when you’re hungry, make sure you eat something else if you want to have a fighting chance.

Self-Control Secret #3 – Exercise

Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. If you’re having trouble resisting the impulse to walk over to the office next door to let somebody have it, just keep on walking. You should have the impulse under control by the time you get back.

Self-Control Secret #4 – Sleep

When you are tired, your brain cells’ ability to absorb glucose is highly diminished. As I explained in Secret #2, your brain’s ability to control impulses is nil without glucose. What’s worse, without enough sleep you are more likely to crave sugary snacks to compensate for low glucose levels. So, if you’re trying to exert self-control over your eating, getting a good night’s sleep–every night–is one of the best moves you can make.

Self-Control Secret #5 – Ride the Wave

Desire has a strong tendency to ebb and flow like the tide. When the impulse you need to control is strong, waiting out this wave of desire is usually enough to keep yourself in control. The rule of thumb here is to wait at least 10 minutes before succumbing to temptation. You’ll often find that the great wave of desire is now little more than a ripple that you have the power to step right over.

Self-Control Secret #6 – Forgive Yourself

A vicious cycle of failing to control oneself followed by feeling intense self-hatred and disgust is common in attempts at self-control. These emotions typically lead to over-indulging in the offending behavior. When you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Don’t ignore how the mistake makes you feel; just don’t wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what you’re going to do to improve yourself in the future.

Putting These Strategies to Work

The important thing to remember is you have to give these strategies the opportunity to work. This means recognizing the moments where you are struggling with self-control and, rather than giving in to impulse, taking a look at the Six Secrets and giving them a go before you give in.

Foot Drop

What is foot drop?
Foot drop is the inability to raise the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the tibialis anterior muscle that lifts the foot (Figure 1). A common symptom of foot drop is a high steppage gait, often characterized by raising the thigh up in an exaggerated fashion while walking. When a person with foot drop walks, the foot slaps down onto the floor.

2016-09-15-1473960001-2882617-foot1.PNG

Foot drop usually results from an injury to the peroneal nerve which is susceptible to injury at any point of its course. The peroneal nerve begins from the L4, L5, S1 and S2 nerve roots and joins the tibial nerve to form the sciatic nerve (Figure 2). The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs through the buttock and lower limb.

2016-09-15-1473964839-1700154-foot2.PNG

In the lower thigh, just above the back of the knee, the sciatic nerve divides into two nerves, the tibial and peroneal nerves, which innervate different parts of the lower leg (Figure 3). The common peroneal nerve then travels anterior around the fibular neck, dividing into superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The deep peroneal nerve gives innervation to the tibialis anterior muscle of the lower leg, which is responsible for dorsiflexion of the ankle (Figure 4).

2016-09-15-1473964901-5244603-Foot4.PNG

Conditions Causing Foot Drop (Figure 5):
A herniated disc compressing the L5 nerve root may cause foot drop. Another cause of foot drop can be a lumbosacral plexus injury, pelvic fracture. Foot drop may also be caused by a sciatic nerve injury, like a hip dislocation. The common peroneal division of the sciatic nerve is commonly injured during fracture dislocation injuries involving the hip. An injury to the knee, such as a knee dislocation may also cause foot drop. In the event of a knee dislocation, it is important to check for common peroneal nerve and popliteal artery injury. In established compartment syndrome, foot drop is a late finding. Irreversible muscle and nerve ischemia occurs in patients if fasciotomy is not performed. Fasciotomy should be done early. Four hours of ischemia may be tolerated but by eight hours, the damage is often irreversible.

2016-09-15-1473964936-7620194-foot5.PNG

Treatment of Peroneal Nerve Injury/Foot Drop:
If a disc herniation in the low back is impinging on the nerve and causing symptoms of foot drop, then the herniated disc should be treated or removed. EMG and nerve studies should be done for the patient. Recovery may take one year to 18 months. The big toe will be the last to recover. If recovery is not achieved, explore the nerve for repair, graft or tendon transfer.

Yerba Mate Cert. Organic 1 lb: K

Yerba Mate Cert. Organic 1 lb: K

ORGANIC, RAINFOREST-GROWN, FAIR-TRADE Guayakí Yerba Mate is uniquely shade – grown in the rainforest to yield the highest quality mate with the most flavor, vitality and nutrition. A Cut Above Guayaki Yerba Mate has the typical ”Paraguayan” cut. In Uruguay, you will find that they prefer their mate cut to have even more powder. In Argentina, you will find the preferred cut is void of both powder and stems. In our years of research drinking mate in tea bags, through a French press, in a gourd or guampa, we have found that the Paraguayan cut delivers the smoothest balance of flavor. Imparting the sweet nutty profile from the stem content balanced with the strength of the additional surface area from the powder, you have a full bodied mate with several characteristic layers of flavor. We like to consider the cut as a sort of ”whole herb” approach, understanding that the stems add their own distinct function, and indeed carry an additional nutritional profile to the mate. When packing a gourd, gently shaking the mate with a tilt allows the stems to rise and the powder to drop. After inserting the bombilla, the gourd is tilted upright allowing the larger stems and leaf to surround the bombilla and thus creating an additional ”filter” layer that assists in keeping out the fine sediment. No doubt, it does take practice. But isn’t that part of the joy and ceremony? We believe so. Without the powder, the mate needs additional time to impart its full flavor. With the powder, you get balanced flavor from the start with the leaves and stem assisting in carrying the balanced flavor over the duration of the mate ceremony. Enjoy! French Press: Place yerba mate in the French press. Add hot water and steep for 3-10 minutes. We recommend using 1-2 tbsp of traditional loose mate per cup. First, moisten the mate with cool water to protect the nutrients and flavor, then ADD HOT (NOT BOILING) WATER. Coffee Maker: Place yerba mate in filter basket, then brew. Espresso Maker: Yerba mate brews well in most espresso makers. Place yerba mate in a double espresso portafilter. Pull a long shot for a total of 4 oz. Great for making mate lattés. Mate Latte Recipe: Brew 8 oz. cup of Guayakí Yerba Mate or Java Mate. Add sweetener (sugar, honey, or maple syrup) to taste and 4 oz. of steamed milk of choice. Top off with milk foam. Makes a 12 oz. latté. Mate Gourd: Yerba maté is traditionally prepared in a gourd and shared among a circle of friends. Welcome the moments of community born of your own mate circle.

Senate Progressives, Activists Plan Big Public Option Push

WASHINGTON ― Progressive senators and liberal activist groups plan a renewed effort to achieve what they couldn’t when the Affordable Care Act became law in 2010: Create a “public option” health plan in Obamacare that consumers can choose instead of private insurance.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) are among the leaders of the effort, which also includes three members of the Senate Democratic leadership: Dick Durbin (Ill.), Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and Patty Murray (Wash.).

The senators will introduce a resolution Thursday calling for the creation of a public option, and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee will spearhead a grassroots campaign to promote the cause to other senators ― and to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

The revival of the public option comes after Clinton and President Barack Obama both endorsed it as a progressive priority this summer, more than six years after liberal lawmakers left it out of the Affordable Care Act after a lengthy debate.

Moreover, bad news about Obamacare’s health insurance exchanges ― where premiums appear set to rise significantly for at least some customers and fewer insurers will be offering plans for next year ― has invigorated interest among Democrats and other supporters of the health care law in expanding health coverage and reducing costs.

We must continue to make needed health care reforms so that the American people can have health care as a right, not a privilege.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)

“The Affordable Care Act has already expanded health coverage to millions who were previously uninsured and given countless Americans greater peace of mind,” Merkley said in a written statement provided by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. “We should build on this success by driving competition and holding insurance companies accountable with a public, Medicare-like option available to every American.”

As he did during his unsuccessful White House bid, Sanders acknowledged the Affordable Care Act’s accomplishments ― namely the historic reduction in the number of uninsured Americans ― and described the public option as the next step toward universal coverage.

“The Affordable Care Act has made great progress in helping millions of people get access to health insurance. But at a time when 29 million people are still uninsured, and 31 million are underinsured, we must continue to make needed health care reforms so that the American people can have health care as a right, not a privilege,” Sanders said in a written statement provided by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee also shared a portion of the resolution, which Merkley will introduce Thursday, with The Huffington Post in advance of the announcement.

Resolved, that the Senate supports efforts to build on the Affordable Care Act by ensuring that, in addition to the coverage options provided by private insurers, every American has access to a public health insurance option which, when established, will strengthen competition, improve affordability for families by reducing premiums and increasing choices, and save American taxpayers billions of dollars.

Other sponsors of the resolution include Democratic Sens. Debbie Stabenow (Mich.), Barbara Boxer (Calif.), Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.) and Al Franken (Minn.).

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee also has partnered with other groups to generate support for enacting a public option next year, including MoveOn.org and Democracy for America. These organizations will create a petition for supporters to express their views at a new website,  WeWantAPublicOption.com.

“We see this as the most significant health care push by Democrats since the passage of Obamacare,” Progressive Change Campaign Committee co-founder Stephanie Taylor said in a written statement.

No matter how much muscle Senate Democrats may put behind enacting a public option, the policy faces significant and possibly insurmountable obstacles in the near term.

Congressional Republicans continue to focus on repealing all of the Affordable Care Act and replacing it with some other scheme that would provide coverage and financial assistance to far fewer people. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump also backs Obamacare repeal and has outlined a vague alternative that would substantially increase the number of uninsured people.

And even if Clinton prevails over Trump in November and Democrats win the Senate, the party faces slim odds of gaining a majority in the House next year.

Don’t Choke: How To Conquer Paralysis By Analysis

It’s one thing to achieve mastery. It is quite another to be able to perform under pressure. Psychologist Sian Beilock, author of Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting it Right When You Have To, defines choking as suboptimal performance, not just poor performance.

It’s a performance that is inferior to what you can do and have done in the past and occurs when you feel pressure to get everything right.

The most painful part about choking is that you know you can and have done better.

Choking can occur regardless of the number of hours spent practicing. Examples in sports abound. Golfer Greg Norman painfully choked at the 1996 US Masters. Entering the final round he had a six-stroke lead over Nick Faldo and then blew it. Snow boarding champion Shaun White famously missed winning gold at the 2014 Olympic winter games.

Why does the brain sabotage performance just when it matters most? Beilock believes that overthinking the situation is the problem. She calls it paralysis by analysis. Paralysis by analysis occurs when we try too hard to control every little thing. This over-attention to detail interferes with the fluidity and flow of well-rehearsed skills and ultimately undermines the ability to do something that would normally be relatively easy.

You don’t need to be a star athlete to experience choking. It can happen to any of us at key moments. A student who fails even though she was prepared for a test, an entrepreneur who freezes while presenting to potential investors, a well-qualified applicant who blows a key interview.

Try the following tricks to help you stay at the top of your game:

1. Say Om

Meditating before the big event calms the mind, reduces anxiety and increases cognitive horsepower.

2. Practice Under Pressure

Train under conditions that simulate the stress of the actual event. This will mentally prepare you for the real deal

3. Have a “Go-To Mantra

For golfers, a simple thought like “Smooth” or “Nice and Easy” just before hitting the ball can do the trick.

4. Whistle While you Work

According to Beilock:

If the tasks are automatic and you have done them a thousand times in the past, a mild distraction such as whistling can help them run off more smoothly under pressure.

5. Put Pen to Paper

Taking a few minutes to write down your worries before a test or presentation will help you stay focused on the topic and reduce forgetfulness due to stress.

Don’t let your brain sabotage your success.

There’s A Scientific Reason That Doing The Deed Makes You Sleepy

Your partner is out like a light after a roll in the hay. Biology, not chemistry, may well be to blame. There are lesser-known “love hormones” ― i.e.,  not estrogen or testosterone ― that cause us to feel sleepy after sex.

We’ve partnered with Sleep Number to get to the bottom of this copulation correlation. Watch the video above, and consider cutting your partner some slack the next time snores cut short your post-coital cuddling.

Just like diet and exercise, sleep is unique to each person and important for optimal health. Single Mother

Single Mother

Long perceived as the ultimate symbol of social breakdown and sexual irresponsibility, the single mother is now, in the context of welfare-to-work policies, often hailed as the new spokesperson for hard work and self-sufficiency. A dozen years after Dan Quayle denounced the television character Murphy Brown for making the decision to become a single mother just another lifestyle choice, President George W. Bush applauded single mothers for heroic work, and positive on-screen representations of single mothers abound, from The Gilmore Girls to Sex and the City to American Idol . Single Mother describes the recent cultural valorization of this figure thatin the midst of demographic changes in the U.S.has emerged as the unlikely heroic and seductive voice of the new American family. At a moment when one-third of all babies are born to single moms, Single Mother is a fascinating and necessary examination of these new domestic intellectuals.

Is There A Solar System In The Mind’s Sky?

2016-09-11-1473600796-6959847-solarsystem.jpg

Our understanding of the human mind, including where it came from, it’s true nature, and how it works and evolves, is primitive. In the absence of scientific understanding, the lexicons for mindfulness and meditation are rich with evocative metaphors. We search for perfect images or words to describe or evoke various experiences and brain states that free us even for a few moments from the messiness of being human. Now pop stars are calling us in cool ways to calm and clear our minds: “it’s all about the breath,” “feel this moment.”

In mindfulness practices we sit quietly and gently watch the passing inside weather. Thought clouds or windy surges of emotions rush in and pass by. Unhooking from the inner weather leads to experiencing the present moment. You may also get occasional glimpses of a stillness of being, resonating with the sky behind the clouds. Quantum biologists call this resting energy state, widely prevalent in biological molecules, “quantum criticality.” Daoists call it “Dao,” a pervasive stillness of the individual and collective consciousness.

While I cherish tuning into an empty state of mind, I have always felt a nagging dissatisfaction with letting thoughts and emotions go. I am curious about the nature of the thought clouds, windy emotions, and the ever-changing emotional weather report. Judy Collins captures my sentiments in her song Both Sides Now:

I‘ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It’s cloud’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all

A yearning to understand the inner clouds and windy emotions led me on a journey four years ago to “turn the lights on” in my inner world, starting with study of internal family systems (IFS) practice developed by Dick Schwartz. In the IFS model, which is focused on healing, the mindful mind, or “self,” witnesses and orchestrates an internal family of “parts” or subpersonalities that are the source of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, healthy and unhealthy.

As a biologist (17-year career in biotech), immersed in the awe-inspiring order of mother nature, I was certain that there is a strengths-based scaffolding for the internal family. Gradually I unpacked and organized my inner world. I found nine independent life forces or characters, now depicted as my personal emojis.

To convey this experience, I published a hypothesis paper: Coaching the Multiplicity of Mind: A Strengths-based Approach, followed by a new Harvard Health book, Organize Your Emotions, Optimize Your Life, co-authored with Harvard physician Eddie Phillips, and writer John Hanc. For four years I have done a daily roll call as my early morning mindfulness practice, which decodes my emotional weather report and brings some clarity and calm. I have taught the practice to hundreds of coaching clients, helping them tune into a “radio frequency” of each life force.

Now I use the metaphor of a solar system; I experience the psyche as having a sun at the core and eight planets, each in its own unique orbit. My mind seems like the energy field of a solar system. When I want to quiet my mind I ask my “planets” to go out to orbit, like sending kids out to play, so I can have a quiet moment. In Table 1, I list my five steps to decode and settle an agitated emotion.

In my flights of imagination, I wonder whether the solar system is the source of elements and energy forms and states that self-organized on earth into life forms, and four billion years later, populate our minds (Table 2).

Now we are back to a metaphor and a question: Is there a solar system in the mind’s sky?

Table 1: Five Steps to Decode and Settle an Agitated Emotion

  1. Imagine a large, benevolent outer space for the mind’s solar system.
  2. Move the mind’s planets out to orbit and sit in (sort of) still emptiness.
  3. Invite an agitated emotion into a still emptiness to share its message and emotional energy, and perhaps show its character in a costume or scene.
  4. Ask the agitated character to return to the mind’s outer space.
  5. Return to still emptiness. The just-in-time wisdom, previously eclipsed by the agitation, naturally emerges to balance and settle the agitation.

NOTE: This technique is aligned with a basic three-part algorithm of quantum biology (source: Stuart Kauffman) and Daoism (source: Wang Chengya, Beijing):

+ 0 –

Here’s the metaphor. When an emotional energy state (Plus or Yang, Negative or Yin) is in the presence of the Zero or Dao energy state, it seems to resonate with its polar opposite energy and cohere into a wave, a balance of opposing energies.

Table 2: Is there a Solar System in the Mind’s Sky?

Bill Clinton: Hillary Is Doing Fine, Got Dehydrated After Working Like A Demon

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is “doing fine” after her abrupt departure from a memorial event last weekend, former President Bill Clinton assured journalist Charlie Rose on Monday.

“She’s doing fine, she was even better last night before she went to sleep,” Clinton told Rose during an interview that aired on PBS late Monday. “She had a good night’s sleep, she’s doing fine … She just got dehydrated yesterday.”

The Clinton camp has been scrambling to address the incident at a September 11 memorial ceremony in New York City. Video footage taken at the event appears to show the candidate wobbling on her feat and being helped into a van, her feet dragging. Her doctors later announced she had been diagnosed with pneumonia last week, which Clinton did not publicly disclose.

Rose pressed her husband’s claims that she was only dehydrated, asking if there were any signs of something more “serious.”

“Well if it is, it’s a mystery to me and all of her doctors,” Bill Clinton replied, before noting that “frequently ― well not frequently, rarely ― but on more than one occasion, over the last many, many years, the same sort of thing happened to her when she got severely dehydrated.”

The former president assured Rose that his wife wouldn’t be gone for “weeks” ahead of the campaign trail, adding that she had been working “like a demon” and “had two-and-a-half hard days before the day she got dizzy.”

He noted after Sunday’s incident that he’d be “lucky to hold [his wife] back another day” after she cancelled a campaign trip meant to see her in California this week.

The former secretary of state has already come under fire for keeping her illness private from her media detail and all but her closest staffers.

“I just didn’t think it was going to be that big a deal,” she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

Both Clintons pointed to the unequal levels of scrutiny between the two leading candidates, noting Donald Trump had yet to release his tax returns and only provided cursory details about his health.

The Republican candidate promised on Monday to release some of his health records in the coming days.

Hillary Clinton: Half Of Trump Supporters Belong In ‘Basket Of Deplorables’

NEW YORK – Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said on Friday that half the supporters of her Republican rival Donald Trump belonged in a “basket of deplorables” of people who were racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, or Islamophobic.

Speaking at an evening fundraiser in New York, the former U.S. secretary of state said Trump had given voice to hateful rhetoric from such individuals through his behavior as a candidate for the White House.

“To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorables,’” Clinton said. “Unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”

Some of those people were irredeemable, she said, but they did not represent America.

The other basket of Trump’s supporters constituted individuals desperate for change who felt let down by the government and the economy, Clinton added.

“They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different,” Clinton said. “Those are people we have to understand and empathize with, as well.”

Clinton’s comments drew a rebuke from Kellyanne Conway, the campaign manager of the Republican nominee, who said in a message on social media network Twitter that Clinton had insulted millions of Americans.

Many of Clinton’s fundraisers have been closed to the media, but her Friday remarks, preceding a performance by singer Barbra Streisand, were open to journalists.

“What’s truly deplorable isn’t just that Hillary Clinton made an inexcusable mistake in front of wealthy donors and reporters happened to be around to catch it, it’s that Clinton revealed just how little she thinks of the hard-working men and women of America,” Trump senior communications adviser Jason Miller said in a statement.

Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill noted a previous speech in which she accused Trump of embracing a brand of U.S. political conservatism associated with white nationalism and nativism known as the “alt right” movement.

“Obviously not everyone supporting Trump is part of the alt right, but alt right leaders are with Trump,” Merrill said on Twitter. “And their supporters appear to make up half his crowd, when you observe the tone of his events.”

Clinton’s comments were followed by a concert by Streisand, who performed a version of the Stephen Sondheim song “Send in the Clowns” that parodied the New York businessman.

(Reporting by Jeff Mason; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

21 Spirit Lifters To Help You Get Back On Track To Living Your Highest Path

2016-09-08-1473374461-494425-shutterstock_291878198.jpg

During our life journey, we will at some point (or many points) find ourselves in a funk and forget about the lighter side of life. Life’s bumps are hard to escape because they are a normal part of a life well-loved.

Our storms often bring as much value to our life journey as our highlights and happy moments. When life upsets and challenges bring us down, we can use these experiences as opportunities to transform and learn something new about life. We can use our experiences to see life through new eyes.

When we feel ready to move through rough patches, it can be tricky to navigate our way back to level ground. It can be challenging to remember how to feel light and content in life. Sometimes it’s helpful to have a guide to find our way back to loving the lives we are in.

These 21 spirit lifters, are practices I go to when I need some extra help to get back on track to living on my highest path. If any feel right for you, give them a try.

1) Breathe
Intentional breathing is a powerful way to quiet mind chatter and step into the present moment. When I get caught up in the story that life is hard, I have learned the best thing to do is give myself permission to put the story on hold and focus on my deep intentional breathing. A useful practice is to take a full breath in and slowly release the tension and story you may be holding on to. Repeat as often as necessary to help bring more ease into tense moments.

2) Move
When we are engaged in physical activities, we give our minds a break and our health a boost. Moving our bodies helps us release stagnation and instead feel a rush of feel-good endorphins The very act of moving can help us remember everything in life is fluid, nothing is permanent. Whatever stress or challenge we may go through, it will eventually pass. For more inspiration, read 5 Easy Tips to Add More Movement in Your Day.

3) Connect With Nature
Life is like a dream and nature is the extraordinary backdrop transforming the dream into a beautiful miracle. No matter where we live in the world, we are surrounded with natural beauty we can experience on a deep soul level. Step outside, notice the sound of the wind and the warmth of the sun on your skin. Feel the rain dampen your clothes and watch the cool brisk air transform your breath before your eyes. Start to truly experience the incredible sights and sounds before you, and pay attention to your physical response. Connecting with nature awakens the spirit of who we are. Nature helps us come back to the part of us that sometimes gets buried in the noise of life.

4) Give Thanks

There is always something to be thankful for. When we put our attention on what we are grateful for, we begin to notice more reasons and evidence why life is a gift to be enjoyed. Gratitude rituals are powerful and they can be implemented at any time throughout the day. Being thankful gives us hope by helping us remember there is a brighter side to life. For more tips on gratitude, check out 7 Ways Gratitude Brightens Our View.

5) Acts of Kindness
It is uplifting to genuinely give to others without expectation or strings attached. The act of giving is often where the true gift resides. Offering others our kindness, helps us move our focus away from our worries and dramas, and instead connect to our inner spirit. When we authentically give our love and light to others, we are in essence being in our love and light.

6) Dream
As humans we get to use our imaginations to create, envision and dream. There is a real sense of hope and vitality that comes along with giving ourselves permission to dream big dreams. When we were children, it was second nature to dream and to intuitively believe in our creative potential. We haven’t lost our power to dream, sometimes we just need a gentle reminder it is okay to spend time creating new visions for our lives. Take a break from worries, and enjoy how it feels to be hopeful and excited about new possibilities. For more inspiration, check out 7 Simple Strategies To Transform Your Invisible Dreams And Goals Into Reality.

7) Be Mindful With Words

Our words are powerful, especially when spoken aloud. The words we give life to can spread like wildfire. What we say may be used to enrich our lives and the lives of others. Our words can also be hurtful and may cause suffering. When I get caught in a pattern of judging others or feeling bad about myself, I have found it helpful to pay attention to my inner dialogue and words I am speaking aloud. Often placing our attention on the tone of our words is all it takes to set a new intention of speaking kindly to ourselves and others. It is also helpful to give ourselves permission to say less words and have fun noticing how it feels to be more mindful with how we speak.

8) Sleep
There is a lot to be said for getting adequate sleep on a regular basis. In this driven society, many of us push our limits and then don’t take care to recharge. It is no wonder we can get stuck in a rut or feel depleted. Sleep deprivation is dreadful. Sometimes a solid night’s sleep is exactly what we need to hit the restart button and see life from a fresh perspective. Arianna Huffington’s newest book, The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at a Time is a wonderful resource to inspire us to change the way we view our relationship with sleep.

9) Undo
When we get swept up in the endless act of doing, it can be hard to remember how to feel light. When we give ourselves permission to ‘simply be’, we make space to notice the miracles around us. When we slow down, we can savor the moments before us and appreciate life for the gift that it is. For more inspiration, read: Why We Should Spend More Time Being and Less Time Doing.

10) Spontaneity
Sometimes we can get so caught up in regiment, routine and structure that life feels dull and predictable. Sometimes what we really need is a reminder to step outside of our comfort zone and add more zest and excitement to our lives. There are many ways we can be spontaneous. The idea is to follow our heart and take a chance every now and again for the sake of taking a chance.

11) Dress Up
Dressing up can be more about giving ourselves a gift, than about striving to impress others. Our style is a creative expression of who we are, and we can use it as a way to lift our spirits. When I want to feel good on a special occasion or give myself a boost on a gloomy day, I love to paint my nails a bright color or style my hair. Putting some care and attention into our physical appearance feels good. Dressing the part can help us feel confident and comfortable to be who we are.

12) Be Open to Receive
How easy is it for you to receive? For many people (myself included) it can be way more comfortable to give than to receive. Living life with a generous spirit feels good, and it can brighten the path for others too. In this light, it may seem as though the more we give, the better we will feel. This is not necessarily the case. Givers, especially ‘serial givers’, often end up feeling depleted by not balancing the energy they give out, with allowing it back in. When we open up to the idea of giving AND receiving, we allow more peace and balance in our lives.

13) Get Creative

We all have the capacity to create. It usually boils down to our belief in whether or not we think we are creative. When we tap into our creative energy, we are in essence connecting deeper to our inner spirit. There are many creative endeavors we can enjoy. Activities such as: cooking, building, gardening, storytelling, photography, painting, and writing are just some of the ways we can engage our creative senses. Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, is a fantastic read and intriguing way to view how we can openly dance with our creative senses.

14) Celebrate
How often do you take time to celebrate where you are in your life at this very moment? Sometimes we travel through life quickly while we chase one moving target after the other. We can forget to take time to celebrate how far we have come. Giving ourselves the gift of celebratory time not only feels good, it can have a way of putting life in perspective. There are many ways we can celebrate: with friends and loved ones, enjoying a special ritual, or giving ourselves a well-deserved pat on the back for being amazing exactly as we are.

15) Connect
As human beings, we thrive when we connect with the people we are surrounded by. We also receive a sense of peace and clarity when we regularly listen in and make it a priority to have a strong connection with our inner selves. When we are truly connected to who we are, we lead our lives from this truth. From this place, we do not need to seek and search for truths outside of ourselves to feel okay – we know we are okay. When we don’t have an agenda in our interactions, we receive the full benefits of being present and open to witnessing who people really are. Our interactions can help us see how similar and connected we all are.

16) Adventure
When was the last time you went on an adventure? Being adventurous doesn’t always mean traveling the world, climbing mountains or white water rafting. While these kinds of adventures are exciting and definitely lead to a life well-lived, they aren’t always accessible in our daily lives. Adopting an adventurous mindset is something we can do anytime, no matter where we are. We can choose to enjoy more fun and excitement without packing our bags and leaving home. We can add an adventurous spin on the activities and hobbies we love to do. Each day we wake up, we receive another chance to have a unique experience we will never exactly replicate again.

17) Read
There are many gifted writers in the world whose purpose and passion is to entertain, inspire and add to the lives of others. When we are in a funk, it can be helpful to pick up a favorite book and become swept away in story. The art of language and the creative power of human imagination has created countless masterpieces for us to enjoy. Reading is a gift we can turn to when we want to learn, be entertained or escape to a safe space that engages our imagination and senses.

18) Laughter
Laughter truly is the best medicine. We can immerse ourselves in laughter during happy times and in times of distress. Some of my fondest memories are of deep rooted belly laughs shared with good friends. Many of those shared laughs happened during heightened times of upset. Laughter can be used to pull us out of the doldrums and to help make our spirits bright. We can also use laughter to connect back to our passion for living fully, and to experience the many joys and amazing things about life. For more inspiration, read How to Tap Into Your Joy.

19) Honor Your Boundaries
Each of us is in charge of our own personal boundaries. We teach other people how to treat us. If we feel like we are doormats and our boundaries aren’t being respected, it is because we need to honor ourselves first. It can be wildly uncomfortable to sit in the uneasiness of holding a boundary with others who overstep. Sometimes it feels easier to give in and be the people pleaser. But turning our back on ourselves always comes with a price. The more we honor ourselves, the easier our interactions become and the more settled we feel. For more inspiration, read How to Stand in Your Power, and Stop Giving it Away.

20) Be Curious
We are all explorers on this great life adventure. We get to create our own life story and make sense of the world in our unique way. In childhood, we asked endless questions because we were thirsty to know about all things in life. As adults we can lose our passion for learning and discovering new things about life. One way to open up to be students again, is to ask questions and be curious. We can remind ourselves we aren’t meant to have it all figured out, we are meant to be having the adventure of a lifetime. For more inspiration, read 11 Powerful Tips to Keep Your Spirits Bright.

21) Be Gentle
Life can throw us curve balls and we don’t always bounce back the same way. There is no right way to do life. We don’t all have to be on a quest to learn and grow either. Sometimes what we really need is to give ourselves permission to be exactly where we are – whether that is in a place of pure bliss or in the depths of despair. Our highest path doesn’t mean we have to always wear a giant smile and have life figured out. Our highest path is being okay with who we are, exactly as we are.

No matter where we are on our life journey, the greatest gift and spirit booster we can give ourselves, is to love who we are and be gentle with our human selves.

Dodge Darts, Fila Sweaters and Suicide: The Danger of Facades

2016-09-09-1473458330-226319-ScreenShot20160909at12.39.07PM.png

When I was ten, I once sobbed for three straight days. No relative had died. I hadn’t been bullied for wearing unbearably tight tennis shorts (not this time). And no, Welcome Back Kotter hadn’t been cancelled. It was a sad event, not a wholesale national tragedy.

In 1976, my parents sold their ’71 Dodge Dart for a new Mercedes, to go along with their Cadillac. And I couldn’t stop crying. So much so that I even missed Hebrew School- so it wasn’t all bad. Mind you, I was a sensitive boy who’s crying jags could be triggered by everything from a botched haircut to Cindy Brady asking Santa to restore Carol’s voice for Christmas.

What I remember from that time, 40 years hence, was being acutely aware that part of my youth was going away. See, I was an unremitting nostalgist long before I began posting lists of 90’s songs on Facebook. But what I really intuited was a shift, maybe of values. It seemed like the final transition from our more modest life in the flats of Van Nuys to a posher existence in the Jewish Alps of Encino. And even then, with only my gut and intense sensitivity to guide me, I sensed a hollowness in the striving. So much so that my parents remember me finally blurting out the reason I was so upset. Sounding like a ten year-old mini-Marxist, I apparently yelled “It’s because you’re selling out!’

You may be wondering what my disproportionately emotional response to unloading a domestic sedan has to do with National Suicide Prevention Week. Even after typing 3 drafts, my fingertips were asking the same question. And it’s true, this piece has a more esoteric, roundabout thesis than my usual “Don’t eat onion rings after midnight.” Or “My daughter’s going to college. Me, sad.”

What I think this is about is the immense power we give to projecting success to the world. It’s about the need to signal, especially in the social media era, mental well-being, even when it’s not the case. It’s about presenting the world a façade of contentment instead of asking for help. That’s what my Dad did. Right up until he took his own life.

Now I am not claiming to have possessed the predictive powers of a boy Nostradamus or a kid Nate Silver. Nor was I a child with a novelist’s ability to see the grand scope of my family’s saga while it was happening. No, I couldn’t extrapolate all of this from selling a car. But I did intuit that things were changing and I didn’t like them. Either that, or my tennis shorts were too tight.

In a million years, I’d never have predicted this story ending in my father’s suicide. Not my Dad, who until the minute it happened, I had considered the happiest person I knew. To this day, I half-assume my waking hours without him are the bad dream. And the ubiquitous dream where he’s still with us is the real life.

I have never cared about labels, as a kid or today. At 50, my wardrobe consists of one pair of jeans, one pair or Vans and a rotating collection of identical black pocket t-shirts. It’s not a punk rock fashion statement, per se. But I do look like I’m dressed from the Henry Rollins mail-order catalogue. I don’t care about designer suits or designer glasses or designer watches. Plus my utilitarian fashion philosophy is aided by the fact that I couldn’t afford them even if I did care.

Sure, I wanted Quicksilver chord shorts instead of OPs. I said I was anti-materialistic, not a farmer. My mother took great pride in trying to dress my brothers and I in various Fila tennis sweaters and sweat jackets. Now, I wouldn’t mind wearing those ironically at a Wes Anderson costume party. But at the time, I felt like an imposter. Especially because I rooted for everyone but Bjorn Borg, while still secretly wishing I had his hair and headband.

In every aspect of life, I witness parents placing inordinate value on labels, never more so than in elite private schools. The power of labels is why parents knowingly send their kids to insane high schools that destroy their kids’spirits and self-esteem, just so they can brag about it at Soul Cycle and throw a sticker on the back of their Tesla. It’s why someone (me) would stay at an elite school where the wealthiest Gentile boys formed a group called the Sons of Hitler and drew swastikas on the lockers of Jewish seventh graders. Yet, transferring was never an option. Such is the power of a label.

The truth is, we all project facades. We present to the world, through Facebook, happier marriages, better kids, more satisfying jobs and fuller bank accounts than we actually have. I’m not trying to present myself as some holier-than-thou gag writing Dali Lama.

In fact, instances of my colossal hypocrisy abound. I think we can all agree there is no group of people more smug in their zealotry than college freshmen home for their first winter break. Imagine how annoyed my parents must have been with my intro-course socialism, ranting against the capitalist system, quoting Marcuse and C. Wright Mills, all the while eating prime rib at a fancy Maui steakhouse. Or, the time as a temp at Rocketdyne I refused to file any paperwork relating to the military-industrial complex. Where did I think I was working? The place had ‘rocket” in its name!

Even as I decry how beholden we are to labels, I wonder about the damage my own prestige obsessions have caused. When I allow myself to fall into a guilt spiral, I think about my insistence on going to Brown over a UC. And the youthful shit fit I threw over not wanting to transfer even when my parents first encountered money problems my junior year. Did my adherence to the Ivy League “label” incur debts my dad was never able to escape? My guess is that the two are unrelated. But these are the kinds of questions your brain asks as you forever ponder the unanswerable questions regarding the suicide of a parent.

2016-09-09-1473458385-7752691-ScreenShot20160909at12.35.15PM.png

Every generation creates its own facades to signify “making it.” It’s why we’d wear Knights of the Round Table collared shirts from Marshall’s to fool the near-sighted kids in middle school into thinking they were genuine Polo. It why somebody generations ago changed the pronunciation of my last from “Bay-har” to “Bee-har”, presumably to sound less Istanbul and more ‘Merican.

I will never understand the pressure my father must have been under as an immigrant’s son to show he had made it, to signal that he was no longer the Sephardic kid from Boyle Heights who swept up at a drugstore to pay his way through UCLA. I don’t know. And I’ll never know. I can only surmise that the pressure he placed on himself to indicate he’d made it was too immense. And the shame in admitting weakness or asking for help was too great. Thus, for a long time, he created a façade. It was not an accurate reflection of either his financial wherewithal or his inner life. That to me is the great tragedy of this and most suicides. When someone who is loved by all feels they can turn to no one. When the compulsion to keep up appearances outweighs everything else.

You just wish he were here so you could say, we never needed the fancy school or the country clubs or the house on the Westside. None of that ultimately mattered. I’d be a lot happier with a Dad and maybe a ’71 Dodge Dart.

U.S. Takes Strong Stand Against Rhino Poaching With $1 Million Bonfire

In a pit at the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park, $ 1 million worth of confiscated rhino horn was set alight on Thursday.

Orange flames consumed the whole carved horns and horn products falsely touted as having medicinal qualities. Reporters, conservationists and members of the public watched as the fire raged.

The bonfire, the first of its kind in the United States, was spearheaded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). It was a symbolic moment, the embodiment of America’s commitment to end rhino poaching.

“The poaching of rhinos in Africa is an international tragedy that is pushing these magnificent creatures to the brink of extinction,” USFWS director Dan Ashe said at the event, which was held ahead of World Rhino Day on September 22. “The transience of the smoke we see today from the burning rhino horn reminds us of the fragility of the planet’s most imperiled species.

“Their survival hangs in the balance and will continue to do so as long as people are buying and selling illegal wildlife products,” Ashe continued. “Only a rhino needs a rhino horn, and it’s time we all understood that.”

According to the San Diego Zoo, a rhino is poached every 8 hours in Africa. At this rate, the animals could become extinct in the wild within 15 years.

Some species of rhino are already on the brink of disappearing forever. For the northern white rhino, just three are left on Earth.

Poaching is the number one threat facing wild rhino populations. Rhino horn is extremely valuable, with a retail price of up to $ 100,000 per kilogram. It’s more valuable by weight than gold, diamonds or cocaine.

Like ivory, rhino horn is often used for decorative purposes, but in some parts of East Asia, where demand for horn continues to grow, it’s valued as a medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, rhino horn has been used as a cure for cancer and as an aphrodisiac.

This is despite the fact that rhino horn is made almost entirely of keratin, the same material as human fingernails. Scientists have found no evidence that rhino horn has any effective medicinal properties.

To quell the illegal rhino horn trade, conservationists have long urged governments to burn their stockpiles of horn products.

“With the increasing value of rhino horn, stockpiles present a high-value target for theft,” Susie Ellis, executive director of the International Rhino Foundation, said in a press release. “In countries with limited resources to protect stockpiles, or with concerns about corruption, destroying horns can eliminate the risk of confiscated horn from entering the black market.”

Ellis said she hopes that if countries like the U.S. burn stockpiles of ivory, it will help to end the scourge of wildlife trafficking and poaching.

“This rhino horn burn sends the message to criminal networks and to rhino horn buyers that the United States will not tolerate illegal trade in rhino horn,” said Ellis. “The high demand for this commodity results in dire consequences for rhino species. Today’s burn makes clear that confiscated horns should not be stockpiled, let alone traded.”

Seeing Clearly For The Very First Time

2016-09-08-1473363265-5803781-Babyseesmom.jpg

I awakened to articles about NBC’s “Commander-in-Chief Forum,” and my heart shriveled and my outrage rose. I wanted to write a letter to NBC protesting Matt Lauer’s bias as a moderator, constantly interrupting Hilary while lobbing softball questions to Trump.

Then I watched a video of puppies and my ire dampened.

Then I read a bunch of FaceBook posts about the besieged Standing Rock Tribe. Read the list of financial institutions funding the Bakken pipeline and wanted to call all my friends to tell them to pull their funds from Bank of America, Chase, Citizens and US Bank. I wanted to get on a horse and ride to North Dakota. I wanted to call up Indian Country Today – the national Native American newspaper I used to write for and say, “Hey. Need a white freelancer on the ground up there?” Probably not.

Next I watched a little baby get glasses and see his mother for the very first time. And my heart melted at the smile that blossomed on his chubby little face as his muddy chaotic world came clear.

And suddenly something else came clear: I had about as much clarity on my world as that baby boy, fumbling his way through life.

Like that baby I lived in a confused, jumbled reality where it was impossible to see clearly because my easily-swayed emotions were constantly jarring my mind to and fro, distorting the view.

Like that baby I didn’t know my outlook was muddled. Like that baby I considered my frothed-up view as “normal.” To what, after all, could either of us compare our worlds?”

When life is made of fuzzy images, that’s all you’ve got. When “reality” is based on news that is little more than emotion-driving rhetoric, that’s all you’ve got. When social media is a frenzy of emotion-laden opinions, that’s all you’ve got. When outrage and bias and opinion and conflict rule the day, that’s all you’ve got.

Fuzzy images–a maelstrom of surging feel good/feel bad/feel complacent/feel outrage moments loosely connected as we jounce from one stimulus-response situation to the next.

And suddenly one other thing came crystal clear: THAT was not a good way to live and do well.

So I searched through the rubble of my emotions, drained away the muddy waters of the “news,” clicked out of FB, squared my shoulders and determined to find one overarching thing that made sense. After a few moments of deep breathing and reflection, this is what surfaced:

Beneath the tumultuous sea of events, differing opinions and strident voices shouting to be heard there is one steady heartbeat drumming … the ONENESS of all life showing up as this multihued rainbow of multiplicity on a shakedown cruise to find itself.

There is one common thread that joins all races and ethnicities: Our humanity. There is one common need: physical security. There is one common goal: the wellbeing of our offspring. There is one universal ingrained desire: love. There is one global hope: peace.

We are far more united than we realize. And we don’t need the spiritual teachings of mystics and the discoveries of quantum physics to show us this. We just need a moment … one moment of calm, inner reflection … one moment of stillness unaccompanied by razzmatazz … one steady breath not drenched in emotion … one dive deep within our own being … for common sense and the steadiness of the obvious truths about humanity’s oneness to take hold.

We are in the midst of watching humanity awakening to what it is and is not true: what is and is not valuable; what is and is not sustainable; what is and is not worth a moment’s thought.

Shout or drum, take sides or come to the middle ground as ONE … either way the song will go on. In the process our oneness may be temporarily obscured. But that doesn’t alter the fact one bit.

The Idea That Legalizing Pot Will Drive Kids To Get High Just Went Up In Smoke

The abuse of marijuana by American youth has declined in recent years, even as adults’ embrace of the plant has continued to grow, according to a recent federal study.

The findings also suggest that the movement toward legalization and decriminalization of the plant in multiple states hasn’t necessarily increased young people’s access to marijuana.

The study, released last week by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, examines marijuana use among Americans 12 and older between 2002 and 2014. It concludes that while more adults in general are using marijuana, the percentage of teens using or abusing marijuana, or who are dependent on the drug, has actually decreased.

The 12-year period covered in the study was one in which more than a dozen states rejected prohibition in favor of legalization of marijuana for medical or recreational purposes. Now, about half the states in the U.S. have legalized some form of marijuana, and several more are considering doing so this year.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit substance in the United States. In 2013, about 20 million people reported having used the substance in the past month, according to the CDC. In 2015, about 47 percent of U.S. adults admitted to using marijuana during their lifetime.

As use rates are up, one might expect that abuse and dependency rates would follow. Certainly that’s what opponents of marijuana policy reform have warned would happen as the legalization movement forges ahead. But that’s not what the CDC found, especially among young people.

With marijuana use more common among more Americans, it should come as no surprise that the CDC found past-month use was up 35 percent since 2002 among people aged 12 and over. In 2002, that figure was 6.2 percent; in 2014, it had risen to 8.4 percent. But, notably, rates of use were up among all age groups except teens aged 12-17, a group whose usage rates saw no significant increases or decreases in 2014, according to the CDC.

Moreover, daily or almost daily marijuana use was up significantly for most Americans, rising from 2 percent in 2002 to 3.5 percent by 2014. But, again, researchers found the opposite trend among 12- to 17-year-olds. Daily or almost daily marijuana use among teens dropped from 2.4 percent in 2002 to 1.6 percent by 2014.

Overall, the study found that marijuana abuse and dependency had fallen significantly among people who’d used marijuana in the past year. In 2014, about 12 percent of Americans who’d used marijuana in the past year were found to be abusing or dependent on the substance. That’s down almost 30 percent from 2002, when nearly 17 percent of past-year marijuana users were abusing or dependent. Teens between the ages of 12 and 17 and youths 18-25 who’d used marijuana during the past year saw the largest decreases in abuse and dependency, falling 24 percent by 2014.

For all Americans, rates of marijuana dependency and abuse also fell. In 2002, 1.8 percent of Americans aged 12 and older satisfied the clinical criteria for abuse of or dependency on marijuana. By 2014, that number dropped to 1.6 percent. And again, youth aged 12-17 saw the sharpest decline during that period ― from 4.3 percent in 2002 to 2.7 by 2014, a shift of 37 percent. Young adults aged 18-25 also saw a significant decline (18 percent) in abuse/dependency rates during the same period.

Somewhat oddly, the CDC found that while use and abuse of marijuana among U.S. youth has declined, the perception among youth that there is “great risk” in smoking marijuana has also declined. Further, the perception of there being “no risk” in using marijuana once or twice a week has increased, the CDC found. Yet despite the apparent softening in young people’s attitudes toward marijuana use, the CDC says that since 2002, the perceived availability of marijuana among youth age 12-17 and 18-25 has also decreased nationally. In other words, American youth may believe that marijuana is less harmful than they once did, but they also believe it’s harder to obtain.

The CDC data on decline in teen use of marijuana dovetails with findings from another recent large national survey on U.S. drug use, the Monitoring the Future Survey. That review found that while more adults are smoking pot, teens are not ― though again, teens also report that they don’t see great harm in using marijuana. Those researchers were also perplexed by these results.

So what’s going on here? The CDC isn’t entirely certain. As far as accessibility, it argues that perhaps the various changes in state marijuana laws, and how those changes have affected young people’s access to the plant, may need more time to show up in the data. Regarding abuse and dependence rates dropping, the CDC suggests that changes in state law may be a contributing factor.

“With changes in medical marijuana laws and, in particular, state laws or policies allowing limited access to low percentages of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD), persons who use marijuana daily for medical reasons might be using strains that pose lower risk for dependence or abuse,” the CDC wrote.

Diane Goldstein, a retired police lieutenant commander who now serves on the board of the drug reform group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, told The Huffington Post that the study’s findings highlight the ineffectiveness of law enforcement efforts against substance use. They also, she said, highlight the potential good that could come of legal regulation.

It’s not clear whether it’s actually any harder for teens to get marijuana now than it used to be, Goldstein said. But just the fact that teens think it’s more difficult might be evidence that “bringing the illicit market above ground minimizes access to children.”

The CDC data is drawn from almost 900,000 people who responded to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health between 2002 and 2014. Respondents were considered to be abusing marijuana if they experienced “problems at work, home, and school; problems with family or friends; physical danger; and trouble with the law” because of their marijuana use.

They were considered to be dependent on the substance if they experienced “health and emotional problems associated with substance use, unsuccessful attempts to reduce use, tolerance, withdrawal, reducing other activities to use substances, spending a lot of time engaging in activities related to substance use, or using the substance in greater quantities or for a longer time than intended.”

Abuse and dependence was measured in accordance with the standards set by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

SIMPLE TRANSITIONS FOR INFANTS AND

SIMPLE TRANSITIONS FOR INFANTS AND

Simple Transitions gives unprecedented attention to improving the effectiveness of daily transitions and offers essential information for teachers in infant and toddler childcare. Karen Miller uses her extensive knowledge of infants and toddlers to gather hundreds of practical, easy, and fun activities, tips, and techniques that help infants, toddlers, caregivers, and parents. The information in Simple Transitions guides caregivers through day-to-day routines and other transitions, such as an infant moving to a toddler classroom.

The activities help infants and toddlers handle themselves in time and space so that they know what to expect and what is expected of them. The result is more relaxed and secure children. The reader will learn how to create non-verbal signals that help young children interpret their world. Many simple rituals are suggested that give children a feeling of control. Simple songs and puppet activities offer an added sense of pleasure.

More than an activity book, Simple Transitions also explains the development of infants and toddlers, and how transitions can be adapted to fit their developmental needs. The book respects the child while maintaining an understanding of the caregiver’s need to get things done. This book will help caregivers “live in the moment” and enjoy what each day has to offer.

Key features of this book:

* Over 400 tips, ideas, and activities to help smooth out the schedule in an infant or toddler classroom.
* Topics covered include the typical routines of the day, with separate sections for infants and for toddlers.
* Strategies for handling transitions, such as entering childcare, continuity of care, and advancing to a new classroom are also included.
* Developmental milestones are identified for each age group.

Rio Paralympics Crowd Boos Brazil President Michel Temer At Opening Ceremony

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Protesters jeered Brazil’s new President Michel Temer on Wednesday as he participated in the county’s Independence Day parade in Brasilia and the opening ceremonies of the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, his first official events since taking office on August 31.

Protesters at the events and in nearly a dozen other state capitals across Brazil were shouting “Temer Out” and “Usurper”.

Police in Brasilia estimated the number of protesters gathered in the nation’s capital at about 600, relatively small compared with protests that brought millions to the streets on occasion over the last two years of impeached President Dilma Rousseff’s administration.

Despite the early demonstrations, markets have given Temer and his economic team the benefit of the doubt, for now. Brazil’s real and main stock index have gained nearly 3 percent since Rousseff’s ouster, even as a new corruption scandal hit the government last week.

His team is expected to oversee a recovery of Brazil’s economy, bogged down in its worst recession in 80 years, but economists do not predict a robust turnaround over the next 12 months.

Investors also expect Temer to push through unpopular and difficult reforms of the country’s bloated pension system, burdensome tax code and inflexible labor laws.

Why I Unpack My Underwear At The Aiport

“I’m sorry, ma’am. You’re four pounds over. You’ll have to step aside. Step aside, ma’am. You can come back when you’ve removed your extra weight.”

I don’t shrink or hide, nor am I the least bit embarrassed that I’ve been told in front of dozens of strangers that I’m over my allotted weight limit. I smile brightly, shift my eyes towards my fiancé, shrug my shoulders and calmly reply, “Well how much is he under?”

I am thrilled when she utters the magic number, “Seven. He is at 43 pounds.”

Not only is this doable, but that will leave three extra pounds for whatever I might accrue on my six-day jaunt to California.

We move to the side, open our carefully packed suitcases (one more carefully than the other), and I instantly remember that I forgot to pack my bras and underwear on the bottom. I move my unmentionables until they are unnoticeable and start to pull out wedges, a hair dryer and one of two toiletry bags.

My man may be seven under, but he has made an almost fatal error: He packed in a small bag. He’s got weight to add, but there’s little room and that only makes this airport Russian roulette even more interesting. Not only am I handing things over, I have to accept lighter items in return. It’s our very own game on the Price Is Right. What items weigh less than others? Will we guesstimate correctly? Can we swap effectively, make weight and still make our flight?

I wear the same uniform daily, but when I go on vacation I pack for a more exotic version of myself.

Effective? Yes. On round two at the check-in counter, our bags are tagged and taken — one at 48, the other at 49.

I would like to accept a pat on the back for my calm demeanor when faced with such an embarrassing, time-consuming, unexpected delay at the airport. Instead, I’ll be honest that I was not as much calm, as merely experienced. I overpack, always. Not only do I overpack, I also pack for someone else and therein lies most of the problem.

I wear the same uniform daily, but when I go on vacation I pack for a more exotic version of myself. This Abby will take the time to dry her hair nicely, apply make-up and will wear clothes during the days that aren’t engineered for a yoga studio. I have such high hopes for the me that I will be on vacation. She is an adult version of my 20-something fashion executive, a version that didn’t move down the 95 corridor when she had kids, the version that didn’t leave her job in Manhattan for full-time parenting.

Manhattan export and mother aside, I can’t deny the truth. There are 40-something Philadelphians with children who dress fashionably and they aren’t me. My kids are past the pooping and spitting up phase. I can afford a pulled together look. I choose comfort over fashion and there is a part of my former stylist psyche that can’t accept reality. This sliver of my subconscious packs my suitcases while clinging to the possibilities of the me I will be on vacation.

This me will wear gladiator sandals, floppy felt hats, fedoras, skirts, linen shorts and sailor-striped tees with pristine white jeans. This me will wear Instagram-worthy — I just threw this on (after an hour of planning) outfits. This me will care that her hair is down and flowing. This me will be pulled together and proud. I love this me.

On my most recent jaunt to California, I gave it the good college try. Cute sundress, fedora and sandals on, we stopped at our hotel between vineyard visits.

“Just give me a few minutes, I’ve got to change.”

“Ok.”

“Babe, do you mind if I wear this?” Hat, dress and sandals are off, non-descript pants; sneakers and a black tank are on.

“You’re cute, wear whatever you want.”

This me will wear … sailor-striped tees with pristine white jeans. This me will be pulled together and proud. I love this me.

The afternoon is spent more comfortably than the morning, only topped by the evening spent in my favorite jeans and blouse.

This is what happens on every vacation. I try on a cute ensemble and discard it returning to the outfit I wear daily at home. Only, on vacation, it gets dirty because I only brought one of my uniform, as I envisioned only needing it for the plane. In the end, I wear it on the plane and for several days whilst the carefully chosen threads sit unworn in the cramped hotel closet. I vow to do better next time, and I don’t. Upon the next check-in at the airport, we scramble to move things between suitcases wriggle and negotiate the zipper, his under packing still accommodates for my over.

My overpacking is not a mistake. My overpacking takes time. It is a deliberate process. I lay everything out by day and then break up the days depending on what we roughly plan to do. I then bring an extra for every few days, just in case. I pack it all, decide it’s way too much and take it all out. I edit and re-pack knowing this will be the time I’m under the weight-limit. This time we will be spared final airport luggage shuffling.

The entire process is time-consuming and energy-zapping, but I don’t alter it enough to make a difference. I don’t ever wind up packing for my reality. We are never spared the glory of re-organizing in front of the USAir counter.

I must enjoy the vision of vacation Abby, the more glamorous and put together self that will emerge more than I mind the fuss and bother.

I am who I am, and I am ok with it, with me. But there’s nothing wrong with daydreaming. And in my daydream, I am still the put together fashion executive I once was — just 20 years older, with kids and yoga pants worn only for yoga class.
